Porto Santo hiking: PS PR1 and PS PR2 route guide

Porto Santo has two open classified peak walks: PS PR1 Vereda do Pico Branco e Terra Chã and PS PR2 Vereda do Pico do Castelo. Both require a SIMplifica reservation. A day trip may leave time for one route; attempting both depends on the live ferry timetable, transfers, weather, available entry slots, and your pace.

The official Madeira hiking index listed PS PR1 and PS PR2 as open and PS PR3 as closed when checked on 14 August 2026. Check it again before travel because status can change.

The ferry from Funchal

The Lobo Marinho, run by Porto Santo Line, connects Funchal and Porto Santo. Timetables, fares, sailing days, and check-in terms vary by date, so build the hiking plan from the operator’s live booking page rather than a fixed schedule copied into a guide.

If you fly, check the airline’s current timetable, baggage rules, and disruption terms. Neither ferry nor flight operation proves that a trail is open.

From Porto Santo’s harbour, arrange a licensed taxi, current rental, or transfer through a public operator. Confirm the quote, licence requirements, insurance, and return timing directly; do not rely on a private driver’s name or an old tourist-versus-local fare claim.

PS PR1 · Vereda do Pico Branco e Terra Chã

The official PS PR1 page describes a moderate route from ER 120 to Terra Chã, with a branch toward Pico Branco. Checked 14 August 2026.

The tourism board says the path was first laid out for cargo mules. It passes Rocha Quebrada, a large prismatic rock formation, and continues through an area included in the Natura 2000 network. The official page also identifies cypress woodland and indigenous flora along the route.

Stay on the signed path and do not pick plants. At the fork, confirm whether your reservation and available time allow the Terra Chã route, the Pico Branco branch, or both before continuing.

PS PR2 · Vereda do Pico do Castelo

The official PS PR2 page lists two alternatives from Moledo: a 3.2km option and a 4.6km option. Checked 14 August 2026.

The official page describes a forest-road climb around Pico do Facho, with north- and south-side alternatives. It records Aleppo pine and dragon tree along the route, the Canhão Viewpoint, a former fort used during pirate attacks, and a statue honouring António Schiappa de Azevedo’s role in reforestation.

Choose the route length before starting. The longer option is not a harmless add-on when the return ferry, transfer, weather, or daylight leaves little margin.

Combining both in one day

A same-day combination is possible only when the live schedule creates enough margin. Work backwards from the required harbour check-in, then subtract confirmed transfers, the official duration of each chosen route, breaks, and a buffer for delays.

One route plus an unhurried return is the safer default. Add the second only when both routes are open, separate reservations are available, transport between the trailheads is confirmed, and the return connection remains comfortable. The beach, museum, or lunch should stay optional rather than squeezing the harbour return.

PS PR3 · check the current status

PS PR3 Levada do Pico do Castelo was listed as closed on the official hiking index when checked on 14 August 2026. Do not enter it while the current listing or a trailhead barrier says closed. Check PS PR1 and PS PR2 independently rather than assuming they remain open alternatives.

Porto Santo’s long sandy beach is a major part of an island visit. Do not treat health claims about the sand as medical advice, and check current sea conditions before swimming.

When to go

Choose the day from the Porto Santo forecast, official warnings, route status, reservation availability, and transport timetable. These exposed routes need sun protection and enough water, but a calendar month alone cannot tell you the heat, wind, visibility, or path condition you will meet.

Check the return connection before leaving the harbour and carry the reservation confirmation offline. A forecast, booking, or ferry ticket does not override a closure or warning.

Should I take the ferry or fly?

Can I stay overnight on Porto Santo?

An overnight can create more weather and transport margin. Compare current licensed accommodation for the exact date and verify the location against the harbour and intended routes; do not use an old platform minimum as a budget.

Are the trails marked?

Use the official route map, current signs, and your own navigation judgment. Download the map before leaving and decide whether you need a qualified guide.

What about the summer heat?

Check the hourly heat, wind, sun exposure, and official warnings for the exact route. Carry adequate water and sun protection, and move or cancel the walk if conditions exceed your experience.

Can I bring my dog?

Check the current trail, ferry or airline, accommodation, and beach rules before travelling with an animal. Do not assume one operator’s policy applies to the others.

Do I need hiking permits like on Madeira?

One day can suit one hike and a simple island visit when the connections work. Stay overnight if you want both hikes or more margin for weather, transport, and time away from the trail.

Can I do it without a car or a scooter?

The harbour-to-trailhead connection needs a deliberate plan. Request current licensed taxi, transfer, or rental terms and confirm the return before leaving the harbour. Do not assume walking along exposed roads is a safe substitute.
