PR17 Madeira: Caminho do Pináculo e Folhadal route guide

PR17 is officially recorded as a difficult 15km route taking about 6 hours 30 minutes, but the full record is not the same as the section currently passable. On 14 August 2026, the official listing allowed the section from Encumeada through Folhadal and Caramujo to Bica da Cana. Where it starts: Boca da Encumeada

Boca da Encumeada is the mountain pass on the ER-228 between Serra de Água and São Vicente. Use live navigation and current road notices from Ponta do Sol or Funchal, and allow for mountain weather. Slow down for bends, wet surfaces, and limited visibility.

The Folhadal descent

Folhadal brings the route into laurissilva and wetter ground. Expect conditions to differ from the exposed high sections, but use the forecast and current trail information rather than a fixed temperature or surface claim.

The Encumeada tunnel

Carry a charged headlamp and a backup for any tunnel included in the currently open section. Do not assume an old tunnel description proves that the same route, direction, or exit is available today.
