PR4 Levada do Barreiro was restricted when checked on 14 August 2026. The official Visit Madeira hiking list said:

“Accessible route : A signposted trail to Ribeira das Cales is available, next to the Funchal Ecological Park Interpretation Centre.”

This guide covers the accessible section, what remains behind the closure, and alternatives if the open stretch is too short.

Current status

The full historical route record must not be read as permission to walk it end to end. The current notice permits only the signposted route beside the Funchal Ecological Park Interpretation Centre to Ribeira das Cales. Check the live notice again before leaving because a restriction can change.

Any open, bookable stretch remains subject to the current IFCN reservation model. Use the official SIMplifica service after confirming the exact status.

What’s open and what’s not

Accessible under the checked restriction: only the signposted route beside the Funchal Ecological Park Interpretation Centre to Ribeira das Cales.

Not authorised by that notice: the rest of the full PR4 record. Do not infer an open upper section, distance, direction, or connection from an old article.

If you planned to walk PR4 end-to-end, choose another route unless the status changes before your arrival. The open detour does not cover the full trail.

Accessing the permitted section

For the section named in the restriction, use the Funchal Ecological Park Interpretation Centre and follow the current signposted route to Ribeira das Cales. Check live navigation, road notices, parking signs, and the park noticeboard. Do not approach an old upper trailhead expecting through-access.

From Ponta do Sol this is a planned Funchal-and-Monte direction rather than a local walk. Check current traffic and the signed final approach; do not plan around a fixed drive time or an old café recommendation.

What you see on the open section

The accessible signposted section enters the Ecological Park landscape around Ribeira das Cales. Conditions, surface, facilities, and viewpoints should be read from current park information rather than promised here.

Do not enter the restricted remainder to reach an old viewpoint, levada section, connection, or ice-well description.

How to check IFCN before driving up

Check the official page on the morning you plan to hike.

visitmadeira.com/en/what-to-do/nature-seekers/activities/hiking

Find PR4 in the trail list and read the full notice, not only the status label. If the wording changes, follow the new permitted section and endpoints; an “Open” label alone should not be used to reconstruct an old route.

The closed and restricted Madeira hiking trails post explains how to use the live IFCN source. It does not duplicate a static full-status list.

Booking is separate from checking status. If IFCN lists an approved stretch as open and bookable, use only the official SIMplifica service and keep the confirmation.

Alternatives to check

If PR4 is too short or still restricted, consider another open route.

PR18 Levada do Rei is a forest alternative when its own status and weather are suitable. Do not assume crowd levels or access from the month alone.

If neither fits the day, use the Madeira hiking guide to find another route, then check its live IFCN status and weather. The best time to visit Madeira guide provides seasonal context.

FAQ

Is PR4 worth going right now? Only if the currently signposted Ecological Park section fits what you want. It is not the full PR4 route. Compare it with another route only after checking that alternative’s status and transport.

How long does the open section take? The restriction notice does not make an old time estimate reliable. Use the distance and duration posted for the currently signposted section on the day.

Can I see the Poço da Neve ice well? Not through a restricted section of PR4. Use only a separately confirmed legal public access; do not approach it around a barrier.

Can I hike PR4 in reverse from Casa do Barreiro? Not under the restriction checked on 14 August 2026. It authorises the signposted route beside the Interpretation Centre to Ribeira das Cales, not a reverse start from an old endpoint.

Is it suitable for kids? Age alone does not determine suitability. Check the posted distance, surface, weather, park rules, and current restriction against the child’s walking experience.

A longer hiking stay

A longer stay makes a closure easier to absorb, but it does not guarantee reopening. Check IFCN and use a legal open alternative instead of planning around an estimated date.

Banana House is a year-round, seven-room coliving in Ponta do Sol, normally designed around one month or longer. See the rooms if a flexible work-and-hiking base fits.
