PR1 Pico do Areeiro: current closure and open section

PR1 Pico do Areeiro is not currently open as a full traverse to Pico Ruivo. As checked on the official IFCN page on 14 August 2026, visitors may walk from Pico do Areeiro to the Pedra Rija viewpoint at kilometre 1.2 and return by the same path. Do not continue beyond the closure.

What is open now

The current open section is an out-and-back from Pico do Areeiro to Pedra Rija. It is not the famous full ridge day, does not reach Pico Ruivo, and does not make the old one-way taxi logistics relevant.

Use the physical barrier and current signs as the endpoint even if a map, video, or old GPX file displays the historic route beyond it.

The open section is still high mountain terrain. Exposure, steps, wind, cloud, and changing visibility matter despite the short distance.

Permit and fee

The 2026 visitor fee for the temporary Pico do Areeiro-to-Pedra Rija route is €4.50. The official full PR1 rate is €10.50, but that full-route amount applies after the route reopens; it is not evidence that the traverse can be walked today.

Reserve an available entry slot through the official SIMplifica service. Register every visitor, including anyone covered by an exemption, and save the confirmation offline.

Weather can still cancel the plan

Check IPMA warnings and the forecast for the mountain area. Do not apply a Funchal or Ponta do Sol coastal forecast to Pico do Areeiro.

High wind, fog, rain, heat, and rapidly changing cloud can make the open section unsuitable. Turn around when the conditions, official staff, or signs make the route wrong. A paid reservation is not a safety clearance.

Bring water, sun protection, a warm layer, a waterproof shell, and footwear with appropriate grip. Start with enough daylight margin to return comfortably.

Getting to Pico do Areeiro

The trail begins at the high road access near Pico do Areeiro. Parking and access arrangements can change with capacity, maintenance, or traffic management.

Confirm the current approach before leaving. A transfer or licensed tour can avoid a parking problem, but verify the exact included route and pickup. Do not pay for a “Pico Ruivo traverse” while the full PR1 remains closed.

What the old full route involved

Historically, PR1 connected Pico do Areeiro with Pico Ruivo across demanding ridge terrain, tunnels, steep changes in elevation, and exposed sections. That context explains its reputation, but it should not be used as a current itinerary while the connecting section is closed.

Do not copy old tunnel counts, travel times, taxi tricks, or end-point pickups into a 2026 plan. Wait for IFCN to announce the reopening and publish the conditions that apply then.

Alternatives

Choose an alternative only after confirming it is open. The Madeira hiking hub links lower and forest routes, while PR8 Ponta de São Lourenço offers exposed coastal terrain rather than a summit experience.

Do not assume a cloudy mountain means every levada is safe. Check each route and its weather separately.

Planning from Ponta do Sol

Ponta do Sol can be a useful base for waiting on a clear-weather window, but it is not close enough to make a casual last-minute high-mountain start. Plan transport and the reservation together.
