PR6 Levada das 25 Fontes: current route and booking guide

PR6 Levada das 25 Fontes route guide covering live status, Rabaçal access, shuttle checks, reservation, weather, equipment, and difficulty.

Banana House team · Published · Updated · 7 min read

PR6 Levada das 25 Fontes is an official 4.3km route each way from Rabaçal to 25 Fontes, estimated at 3 hours and rated moderate. Its figures and open status were checked on 14 August 2026; confirm them again on the live Visit Madeira hiking list. The useful plan begins with status, reservation, weather, and current access arrangements.

What this trail is

PR6 runs through laurissilva to the 25 Fontes lagoon. The official 3-hour estimate applies to the classified route, not automatically to parking, access-road walking, queues, or another Rabaçal trail. Review the current profile and conditions rather than assuming every levada section is flat.

The trail is well marked. Permit details appear below.

Check the current Rabaçal shuttle

Access-road, parking, and shuttle arrangements can change. Follow current signs at Rabaçal and confirm whether the legal plan involves walking, a shuttle, or another arrangement. Check operating hours, fare, payment, capacity, and final service on the day; do not rely on old distances or times.

Risco vs 25 Fontes

The two trails leave from the same Rabaçal forestry house, run through the same laurel forest, and split about 800m in.

Levada do Risco (PR6.1) is a separate classified route with its own official record and reservation. Do not apply PR6 access or difficulty to it automatically.

Levada das 25 Fontes (PR6) is 4.3km each way with an official 3-hour estimate and moderate rating.

Combining routes increases time and fatigue. Confirm both routes are open and included in the booking, then choose the order around actual conditions and ability rather than treating an old suggested sequence as a rule.

If you have to pick one, compare the shorter Risco waterfall walk with the longer PR6 route to the lagoon.

Weather and equipment

Rabaçal conditions can differ from the coast. Check the plateau forecast and bring layers suited to rain, cooler air, and wet surfaces rather than relying on a fixed visibility or temperature claim.

  • Hiking shoes with grip (not running shoes, the wet rock punishes them)
  • A base layer plus a fleece
  • A rain shell that packs into its own pocket, not a windbreaker
  • A buff or hat
  • A small pack with 1L of water and snacks

These layers can still be useful in July. Check the Madeira weather breakdown by month before you go.

Permits and booking for 2026

PR6 is a classified route under the 2026 IFCN reservation model. Check that it is open, then select an available entry slot through the official SIMplifica service. The current individual-route fee, exemptions, combined-route rates, and booking sequence are in the Madeira hiking permits 2026 guide.

Do not rely on a third-party workaround or an assumed trailhead sale. Carry the official confirmation offline and recheck status and weather on the day.

Photo spots along the route

About 500m before the lagoon, the trail crosses a stone bridge over a stream feeding the levada. Light filters through the laurel canopy onto moss-covered stones.

The kilometre between Risco junction and 25 Fontes runs through the densest part of the laurel forest, with twisted trunks, hanging lichens, and water beside the trail.

Combining PR6 with another route

Do not combine PR6 with PR9 from the old distance and drive-time calculation in this article. They are separate reservations in different areas, and the earlier total was wrong. If considering two routes, add their current official distances, access, transport, daylight, and fatigue from scratch.

Food after the hike

Check current opening hours, menu, and location before depending on a café. Carry enough food and water for the route and an access delay.

FAQ

How long does the Levada das 25 Fontes hike take? Around 3 hours of walking (4.3 km each way), plus 30 to 60 minutes for the shuttle road if you walk it. Door-to-door from the upper car park: 4 to 5 hours. Allow a half-day.

Do I need a permit for PR6 in 2026? When PR6 is open, use the official SIMplifica service and the current IFCN fee model. See the Madeira hiking permits 2026 guide.

Is the 25 Fontes hike suitable for kids? Age alone does not determine suitability. Compare the official moderate rating, return distance, current surface, weather, and crowd conditions with the child’s experience. PR6.1 still needs its own status and suitability check.

What should I wear for PR6? Bring hiking shoes with grip, a warm layer, and a waterproof shell. Rabaçal can feel much cooler and wetter than the south coast, even on a summer day; check the plateau forecast rather than applying a fixed temperature difference. See the Madeira seasonal guide.

Is the lagoon swimmable? Follow current signs and ranger instructions. Do not enter the water when bathing is prohibited, and do not use an old temperature claim to assess cold-water risk.

What’s the difference between PR6 and Levada do Risco? Same trailhead, different directions. Risco is 1.7 km to a 100m waterfall, about 1 hour, easy. PR6 is 4.3 km to a spring-fed lagoon, about 3 hours, moderate. They share the first 800m.

A longer hiking stay

A longer stay gives more room to choose a suitable forecast and available entry slot. Shuttle queues, weather, and crowd levels are not guaranteed by hour or season.

Banana House is a year-round, seven-room coliving in Ponta do Sol, normally designed around stays of one month or longer. Every room has a real desk and chair, and the house has 200+ Mbps fibre plus additional work areas. See the rooms and current monthly options.
