Rabaçal Madeira trail network: check each classified route

Rabaçal Madeira hiking guide to PR6, Risco, Alecrim, Lagoa do Vento, Levada Velha, Pico Fernandes, Túnel do Cavalo, and Paul II route checks.

Rabaçal contains several separately classified PR6-series routes through the wider laurissilva area. They do not all share one trailhead, car park, difficulty, access rule, or reservation. The live Visit Madeira hiking list was checked on 14 August 2026; open each route’s record before building a plan.

Check access for the selected route

Start with the individual route record. Some routes use the main Rabaçal area; others have different official endpoints or parking. Follow current signs and confirm road rules, shuttle operation, hours, fare, payment, and final service on site. Carry the food and water needed for the selected route; do not assume a café, shuttle, or refill point is operating.

The map of trails

The PR6-series numbering is not a promise of a single connected loop. PR6, PR6.1, PR6.2, PR6.3, PR6.4, PR6.5, PR6.6, PR6.7, and PR6.8 appear as separate records in the current list. Check the signed endpoints and connections for each one.

PR6 · Levada das 25 Fontes

The famous one reaches a spring-fed lagoon through laurissilva. Use IFCN for the current official distance, duration, difficulty, and access. Do not drink from the lagoon or levada.

Check the current IFCN status and reservation requirement before leaving. Use only the official SIMplifica service for a classified route that is open and bookable. The narrow stretch by the lagoon has stairs and drops on one side, so it is not the easiest pick for a first hike.

PR6.1 · Levada do Risco

PR6.1 has its own official record, status, duration, difficulty, and reservation. Confirm its current start, finish, and any signed connection with PR6 before considering both routes.

PR6.2 · Levada do Alecrim

PR6.2 is separately classified. Its official estimate was about 2 hours 30 minutes when checked, but use its current record for distance, endpoints, difficulty, and any signed connection with PR6.3.

PR6.3 · Vereda da Lagoa do Vento

Use the current IFCN record for the official distance, duration, difficulty, access, and connection with PR6.2. The descent can be steep and slippery in wet weather; “easy” is not a substitute for assessing the conditions and the walker.

PR6.3’s official record was 1.8km with an estimated duration of 1 hour 30 minutes when checked. Confirm the live start, finish, direction, difficulty, status, and reservation before choosing it.

PR6.4 · Levada Velha do Rabaçal

PR6.4 is listed separately as Levada Velha do Rabaçal. Use its current official endpoints, distance, duration, difficulty, and reservation; do not choose a spur from an old article.

PR6.5 · Vereda do Pico Fernandes

PR6.5 is listed separately as Vereda do Pico Fernandes. Check its current official endpoints, distance, duration, difficulty, weather, and reservation.

PR6.6 · Vereda do Túnel do Cavalo

PR6.6 is listed separately as Vereda do Túnel do Cavalo. Check its current official endpoints, distance, duration, tunnel equipment, difficulty, and reservation. Do not infer a legal start from whichever end appears convenient.

PR6.8 · Levada do Paul II: Um Caminho para Todos

The official record names PR6.8 “Um Caminho para Todos” and describes a separate route between Rabaçal and Estrada do Rochão. Confirm the current accessibility specification, surface, assistance needs, parking, distance, and status on its own page before bringing a wheelchair, buggy, or mobility device.

How to combine multiple trails in one Rabaçal day

Do not assemble a multi-route loop from an old article. Combine routes only when IFCN shows every segment open, the connection is signed, the reservations match, and the total distance, daylight, equipment, and transport fit.

FAQ

Which Rabaçal trail is easiest? There is no useful permanent ranking. Compare each current official distance, duration, difficulty, surface, weather, access, and the walker. An accessibility-themed route still needs its current specification checked.

Which Rabaçal trail has the hidden lagoon? PR6.3 is Vereda da Lagoa do Vento. Choose it from its current official record, not from a promise that it receives less foot traffic.

Can kids hike at Rabaçal? Age alone is not a route rating. Compare the official surface, distance, drops, tunnels, weather, crowding, and the child’s ability. Confirm accessibility claims on the current IFCN page before bringing a buggy or mobility device.

Can dogs come on the Rabaçal trails? Check current IFCN, protected-area, and transport rules before bringing an animal. Carry water and do not assume a shuttle accepts animals or that an accessible route is automatically suitable.

Are permits the same as PR6 for all the sister trails? Each classified route needs its own live IFCN status and booking check. Use the official SIMplifica service for an open route subject to reservation; do not infer that a sister route is free because an older article said so. See the Madeira hiking permits 2026 guide.

Is Rabaçal worth a full day if I only have a week on Madeira? It can justify a full day when the selected route is open and the booking, transport, weather, and daylight fit. Do not rely on a fixed first-shuttle time or assume two routes can be combined.

A longer hiking stay

More time creates weather flexibility, but it does not guarantee that every route is open or suitable. Choose each day from the current IFCN status rather than trying to complete the network as a checklist.

Banana House is a year-round, seven-room coliving in Ponta do Sol, normally designed around stays of one month or longer. Every room has a real desk and chair, and the house has 200+ Mbps fibre plus additional work areas. See the rooms and current monthly options.
